Fruit trees for the home garden
Planting - Soil Preparation:
The roots of a young tree have already been severely pruned
when "lifted" in the nursery. If unpruned, the tree will make only spindly
growth as this puts unnecessary strain on the developing root system. When all unnecessary
wood is cut back, all energy supplied is directed to the new growth, making new growth
stronger. Here are some planting tips for you to follow:-
- Prepare soil in advance. Add well rotted compost,
organic matter or animal manure and mix in well;
- Ensure good drainage and mound the soil to further improve
the drainage;
- Ph level should be between 6.5-7.0. You may need to add some
lime, but don't add it at the time of planting.
Planting - Method:
- Plant in winter months when trees are dormant;
- Dig a hole slightly larger than the root system of the tree;
- Do not add any strong fertilisers in the hole as they
may burn the tree roots;
- Soak tree roots in water prior to planting;
- Remove any damaged roots;
- Place root system on small mound of soil inside the hole;
- Fill in the hole making sure the bud union is at least
90-100mm above soil level;
- Water in thoroughly;
- If necessary trees may be staked for support.
